Dr. Eugene Bailey Rising Leader Program
2025–2026
The Dr. Eugene Bailey Rising Leader Program invites young professionals to serve a 1-year term on the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA’s Board of Advisors. This “Rising Leader” will, under the mentorship of current JRYMCA board members, participate in committees and events in service of Southeast San Diego, while growing their own leadership, collaboration and decision-making skills.
About Dr. Eugene Bailey
Dr. Bailey dedicated 42 years of service to the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA’s Board of Advisors before retiring in 2024. During his tenure, he established a mentorship program within the board, significantly enhancing engagement and effectiveness. Driven by his passion for developing future leaders, Dr. Bailey aspired to extend this mentorship initiative to empower young leaders throughout the San Diego community.
Rising Leader Qualifications:
- Enrolled in Community College or 4-year University program (sophomore or above)
- Complete the Rising Leader application and interview process
- Able to fulfill the Rising Leader Commitments (outlined below)
Rising Leader Commitment:
- Serve a 1-year term (Aug. – June)
- Attend monthly Board of Advisors Meetings on the 4th Tuesday of every month
- Participate on at least one Board of Advisors Committee
- Participate in Jackie Robinson Y events (such as the Halloween and Holiday community events)
- Participation in the Annual Campaign Fundraiser
Upon completion of their term, the Rising Leader will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship toward their educational pursuits.

- Application Due Date: March 31, 2025
- Interview Window: April 2025
- Selection of Rising Leader: May 2025
- Board of Advisors Orientation: August 2025
